About product

A mantlet with a canvas cover and a barrel for the A34 Comet - the postwar form, 1:35

This is an accessory to a kit, not a model of a tank. The set joins two things together: the gun mantlet with its canvas cover and the barrel of the 77 mm OQF gun. The barrel replaces the plastic part, which always has a lengthwise mold parting line, and is straight and stiff enough to carry its own weight, so after years in a display case it will not droop at the tip. The mantlet comes as a single casting, so gluing two halves together falls away as well.

The real subject

The A34 Comet was a British cruiser tank from the end of the Second World War which combined good mobility with a substantially stronger weapon than its predecessors had. The main armament was a 77 mm gun of the HV type, listed in British nomenclature as Ordnance Quick Firing, that is OQF: a weapon derived from the 17-pounder gun with a shorter case, so that it would fit into the turret. The Comet served for a long time after the war as well and reached several other armies. This set is designated as the postwar form of the canvas cover, and a variant of the Second World War period is also made.

Fitting and painting tips

Wash the resin mantlet in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting block off with a saw and level the mating surface on abrasive paper laid on a flat board. Degrease the metal part with alcohol. It is glued with cyanoacrylate; on larger areas two-part epoxy helps. Before gluing, check the axis of the barrel against the turret dry. The canvas cover stands out when a dark wash into the folds and a fine lightening of the high points with a dry brush follow the base color, which gives the fabric a different structure from the steel around it.

Who the set is for

  • builders of British A34 Comet tanks in 1:35 scale
  • modelers who are building a postwar vehicle and want the matching mantlet cover
  • those bothered by the mold parting line on the barrel and on the mantlet
  • more experienced builders used to resin and cyanoacrylate
