Star-pattern fourteen-inch wheel discs of an Italian cut together with tires.

A barrel laid out as a star is one of the recognizable marks of the Italian motoring era, when a light alloy wheel was only becoming ordinary equipment on series cars. Cromodora was among the suppliers whose products appeared on Turin and Milan coupes and on the sharper versions of family sedans alike. Fourteen inches sounds modest today, but it is exactly this size that gives a period car the right proportions; in scale it works out to a rim with a diameter of around 14.8 millimeters.
With a 14 it holds that mistakes are more conspicuous than with large diameters, because the eye compares the shape with the thin side of the tire. It therefore pays to see that the wheel seats perpendicular and does not protrude even slightly out of the arch. The space inside the barrel is shallower on period wheels than on today's designs, yet one can see through the star onto its wall and tell whether the part is drawn out or ends behind the face. It is precisely this part that a series kit as a rule does not deal with.
The package combines discs with rubber tires, so you do not have to trouble yourself looking for shoes with a period-correct tall side. That is essential at this size: a modern low-profile tire would spoil the whole impression.
Period wheels tended to be silver with a polished lip, and on sportier versions a black center appeared as well. Both can be managed with masking tape and patience.
Put the tire on only once the disc is finished and dry. With a tall side the rubber easily turns and drags the fresh paint off the lip with it, which is damage that can no longer be put right other than by respraying the whole part.
