The Estafette was a light Renault van built from the end of the 1950s that stayed in production for two decades. The vehicle had its cab set above the front axle and front-wheel drive, which among commercial vehicles of that day was far from a matter of course; thanks to it the load floor was low and flat, with no drive shaft intruding. It was exactly this combination that made it a universal machine for tradesmen, the postal service, small businesses and rescue crews. The high roof version increased the usable volume and is one of the most characteristic faces of the vehicle.
The bodywork with its large smooth surfaces is the key to this type: sand and polish the joints carefully, because in a large scale every unevenness shows. It pays to spray the base color with an airbrush in several thin coats, let it dry thoroughly and go over it with a gloss varnish before the decals, as a decal silvers on a matte surface. Glue the glazing with a glue meant for clear parts, as ordinary plastic cement fogs clear plastic. Finish and paint the interior and the engine bay before you close the bodywork. A commercial vehicle suits a restrained patina; light soiling of the sills, the fenders and the underside underlines that it is a working machine.
