A masking sheet for a large model of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 in the colors of Adolf Galland's airfield protection flight. It carries the shapes of the canopy frames for the outside and the inside and four stencils for national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Fw 190D-9 came about by converting the radial-engined Focke-Wulf to the Junkers Jumo 213 V engine. It was given a lengthened nose and an extended tail so that the machine would stay in balance, and among pilots it earned the nickname Dora or the long-nosed one. In the spring of 1945 it was flown by the airfield protection flight, whose task was to cover the jet Messerschmitts of the JV 44 unit during takeoff and landing, when they were at their most vulnerable.
It was exactly this task that gave the machines their unmistakable colors: the lower surfaces were painted with transverse red and white stripes so that the friendly anti-aircraft batteries around the airfield would recognize that these were German aircraft. A combination with a hard border between red and white sprays considerably better through a stencil than it paints with a brush, and in 1:24 scale that holds doubly.
The cockpit is made up of a flat armored windscreen and a sliding teardrop with fairly sparse framing, so the main work lies in the cleanliness of just a few strips. The outer shapes from the sheet keep the clear areas covered while the paint goes on, and the counterparts for the inner side allow the frames to be finished from within. The four masks of national insignia replace decals where the carrier film is most visible, that is on the large flat areas of the wing.
When working on the long-nosed variant it helps to remember that the border between the stripes on the underside runs perpendicular to the axis of the fuselage and is measured from a fixed point, not from a panel line, which on the lengthened rear has shifted. Apply the paint for the markings from the edge of the stencil inward, so that it does not run under the film. The package is intended to complete a finished kit; it holds no plastic parts and no paints.
