About product

Spitfire Mk.IX wheels with five-spoke hubs, 1:24, Eduard

This set is a resin accessory for a Spitfire Mk.IX model in the large 1:24 scale — it is not an aircraft kit. The wheels are one of the first places a viewer looks on a finished model, and in this scale every compromise on the plastic parts already shows: the mold seam across the tire pattern, softly rendered hubs, a missing flat spot. A resin casting is poured in one piece, so both the pattern and the shape of the hub stay sharp. The name specifies that this is the five-spoke hub version — Spitfires flew with differently arranged hubs as well, so check against photographs which ones the machine you are building carried.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX came about as a quick answer to the appearance of more powerful opponents and combined the older airframe with the two-stage supercharged Rolls-Royce Merlin 60 series engine. It became one of the most widespread versions of the whole family. The main landing gear of the Spitfire is slender, drawn out of a thin wing, and the wheels are therefore a prominent visual feature on it. The design of the hubs changed during production and in service, which modelers resolve exactly by changing the wheels.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in lukewarm water with detergent to get rid of any mold release agent — otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting block off with a saw or a cutting disc; never break it off. Protect your airways when sanding resin and sand wet, because the dust is fine and unpleasant. It is bonded with super glue, ideally with an accelerator. Apply a primer before painting, then a matte dark gray on the tire (black looks unnatural in scale) and the hub according to the documentation for the machine. The boundary between the hub and the tire can be handled with a circular mask or a fine brush. Fine dust on the tread and light dirtying of the landing gear legs will tie the set visually to the rest of the model.

Who the set is for

  • builders of large Spitfire models in 1:24 scale
  • modelers who want a sharp tire pattern with no mold seam
  • anyone interested in an accurate rendering of the five-spoke hub
  • those who finish a model for a display case and care about landing gear detail

This is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The name does not say. If you need wheels with a flat spot from the load, check that against the illustration on the box of the set.

The difference is in the design of the wheel hub. Eduard lists both variants as separate items; choose according to the machine you are building and to period photographs.

With super glue, ideally with an accelerator. Ordinary cement for plastic does not soften resin, so it will not hold.

Yes. Wash them in lukewarm water with detergent to remove any mold release agent from the mold, and apply a primer. Without that the paint holds poorly on resin.
