About product

Toyota Starlet EP71 Turbo-S, three-door, middle series 1987, 1:24, Hasegawa

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:24 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa, from its range of historic automobiles. The real subject is the Toyota Starlet of the EP71 generation in the top Turbo-S configuration, three-door body, the middle series corresponding to 1987. Telling the series apart is no formality on this generation: the early, middle and late versions differ in details of the front end, the lights and the equipment, and Hasegawa issues them as separate boxings, so it is a good idea to pick exactly the one you want to build.

The real subject

The Toyota Starlet EP71 is a small hatchback from the second half of the 1980s with a transverse front engine and front-wheel drive. The Turbo-S configuration is the top of the range: a small-displacement turbocharged four-cylinder engine gave the car a power-to-weight ratio that was very favorable by the standards of the day, and with it came a firmer suspension and sportier equipment. The car became popular in domestic production-car racing and among admirers of light Japanese hatchbacks. Compared with the five-door, the three-door body has shorter side glazing and longer front doors.

Building and painting tips

The body is what decides. Sand the parting lines down, apply a filler primer, sand it wet and only then spray the color in several thin coats. Cars of this era typically have saturated single-color finishes and lettering decals, so a gloss varnish and polishing pay off, and the decals will stand out on them. Do the black plastic trim strips, the window frames and the grille in a matte or satin color, so that they stand apart from the body. Finish the interior, the engine bay and the chassis before you join the body to the floor. Fit the wheels and tires at the very end, so that the paint on the fenders is not damaged while handling the model.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of Japanese cars of the 1980s in 1:24 scale.
  • For modelers who want a particular series of the EP71 generation in the collection.
  • For lovers of small turbocharged hatchbacks.
  • For builders who enjoy fine-tuning a gloss finish and delicate lettering.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The EP71 generation saw changes during production, so the early, middle and late versions are told apart. They differ in details of the front end, the lights and the equipment, and they come out as separate boxings.

The three-door. It has longer front doors and shorter side glazing than the five-door variant.
