The film series about street racing turned several everyday cars of the 1990s into collectors' icons, and the modified Jetta is among them. The viewer remembers it because of how incongruous it looked next to the other machines: a family sedan with graphics and wide wheels, which nevertheless lined up on the starting line.
Models with a film history have the advantage that people start talking about them by themselves. In a display case it is enough to stand two or three cars from one scene and a visitor recognizes them before you manage to explain anything. A collection with a theme comes about that way, not just a heap of cars – and themed lines are easy to add to gradually, piece by piece.
A street race takes place after dark, which is both an opportunity and a challenge for the builder of dioramas. Wet asphalt reflecting lights, subdued lighting under the car, a crowd of figures behind a low fence, hoods open and people bent over engines. The reflection on the road surface can be suggested with gloss lacquer over a dark base and reads more convincingly than any detail on the body.
The conversion changes the shape of the body of an existing kit. Before gluing, the castings are washed and degreased and the gaps are made up with putty. The graphics are usually handled with decals, which need a perfectly smooth and glossy base, otherwise every unevenness shows through them. Wide wheels and a lowered suspension belong to the overall look, so it pays to settle the stance of the car before you start on the paint – a model standing high would spoil the whole impression.
