Accurately cut self-adhesive masks of kabuki tape for a model of the Soviet Mil Mi-4AV helicopter in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor a decal sheet: it is an accessory that shortens the most disagreeable part of the build, the masking of the glazing before spraying.
New Ware grades its sets by breadth of coverage into BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT. The helicopter has an extensively glazed pilot's cabin with divided panes and angled frames. Cutting tape by hand for a shape like that is a long job, and a single inaccurate cut is enough to make a frame uneven in width, which shows on a finished model at once, because the eye compares neighboring frames side by side. A pre-cut mask solves the problem by fitting the shape exactly as the model has it engraved. The Mi-4 was a Soviet helicopter with a piston radial engine in the nose and a cargo compartment in the fuselage, known among the Allies by the code name Hound; the AV version was armed.
Lift the mask off the sheet with pointed tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it down dry and only then press it along the whole edge with a toothpick so that the edges bed down. Spray several thin coats, as a single heavy one readily creeps under the edge. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, not days later when the adhesive has set. Keep the rest of the sheet with the unused parts in its wrapper away from dust and direct light, so that it stays tacky for a later build.
