This is an injection-molded plastic kit of the Antonov An-3 turboprop utility biplane in 1:48 scale from A&A Models. The set combines older injection-molded plastic parts with newly produced ones (the turboprop engine cowling and the propeller), and it is completed by a set of photo-etched parts, masking film and rubber and resin tires. As a biplane, the model calls for bracing wires between the wings, which give it its characteristic look and its strength.
The An-3 is the turboprop modernization of the famous piston-engined An-2 Colt biplane. The original radial engine was replaced by a turboprop, which gave the aircraft more power and better behavior, above all in hot and high-altitude conditions. The An-3 served for agricultural, transport and utility duties in the former Soviet Union and in Ukraine. It kept the rugged, undemanding character of its predecessor, valued for operation from unprepared strips.
Glue the parts with liquid cement for plastic and the photo-etched and resin elements with super glue. The hardest part is the fit of the upper and lower wing and the bracing — prepare and tension the struts and the wires carefully so that the machine sits square. Mask the cockpit glazing before painting. Run a gloss coat over the surface before the decals. The Soviet and Ukrainian schemes offer both austere utility finishes and more colorful options.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
