A 1:32 scale kit of the Bell AH-1G attack helicopter from Special Hobby, a Czech brand based in Prague. Hi-Tech is the manufacturer's own line; the subtitle Early Tails over Vietnam narrows the box down to early machines in Southeast Asia. What the box holds beyond the plastic parts is given by the contents list on the box and by the manufacturer's instructions. The 1:32 scale is rewarding for helicopters: the model is large enough for the interior and the fine detail of the rotor head to stand out.
The Bell AH-1 was the first production machine designed from the outset as an attack helicopter. It drew on the dynamic system and the powerplant of the proven UH-1, but it received an entirely new, very narrow fuselage with tandem seating — the pilot at the rear and higher up, the gunner in front. The narrow cross-section reduced frontal drag and vulnerability. Power came from a turboshaft unit, and the armament was carried in a traversing turret under the nose and on short stub wings at the sides of the fuselage. Early machines differ from later ones in a number of details, among them the shape of the tail section and of the turret.
A helicopter in 1:32 stands and falls with its interior — the cockpit is clearly visible through the extensive glazing, so it pays to finish and paint it before you close the fuselage. Glue the plastic parts with thin cement for polystyrene; if the box holds resin or photo-etched extras, use cyanoacrylate glue for those and wash the resin free of mold release agent beforehand. Mask the extensive glazing carefully, ideally with pre-cut masks. Apply a primer before painting. The rotor blades are long and prone to warping — store them hanging or flat. Weathering should stay restrained and concentrated where real wear occurs: walkways, the area around the exhaust and the leading edges of the blades.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
