The Avia S-199 is a postwar Czechoslovak fighter that came about on airframe parts of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G. The original powerplant for them was lacking, so the machines received an engine and a propeller from a bomber program. The combination of a heavy propeller with a fighter airframe showed in unusual behavior on the takeoff run and on landing, and it earned the aircraft the nickname Mezek (the Mule) among pilots. That very mismatch makes the Avia S-199 a rewarding subject that will not blend in with the other fighters on a shelf.
