The second stance of the pair of airmen of the period 1914 to 1918 in the large 1:32 scale from the brand Black Dog. The sense of the numbering is plain here: two different figures side by side make a scene that one figure cannot carry on its own.
A lone figure by a machine comes across as an accessory. As soon as a second one is added, a relationship arises and the viewer starts looking for a story: who is saying what to whom, who has just returned, who is only now climbing aboard. You need no large base and no many accessories for that; a piece of grassy ground, a flying helmet set down and a pair of figures turned toward each other is enough. It is exactly in this that a pair of figures differs from mere filling of space.
So that the figures do not look like two versions of the same person, give them a different shade of skin and a differently saturated brown on the coat. Leave the goggles on one of them in place and on the other pushed up above the forehead, if the shape allows it. You will solve the difference in height by sinking one figure a fraction of a millimeter deeper into the base. At the end unify both with the same final matte layer and the same tone of dust on the footwear. The differences you have put into the figures will not disappear through that; they will only stop coming across as incongruity.
