This sheet is not a kit. These are waterslide decals in 1:32 scale with the German naval covering pattern, the so-called naval lozenge. The brown version offered here is tuned toward warm tones; in addition, the print has the structure of the covering fabric suggested, so the finished surface does not look like a smooth film but like stretched fabric.
Toward the end of the First World War Imperial German naval aviation used its own version of the printed covering pattern. Compared with the usual diamond lozenge it was made up of larger hexagonal fields, so that it would stay effective even when seen from a greater distance above the water. The pattern was printed in several color casts and it differed on individual machines in shade as well as in weathering, because the covering faded quickly in salt water and sun.
Naval lozenge goes onto large continuous areas, so plan in advance where the joints will be and hide them under ribs or near the trailing edge. The base has to be glossy and smooth. With older sheets caution pays off: the carrier film can become brittle and yellow. Try one small decal first, and when soaking leave the sheet in the water only briefly. If the film cracks, go over the sheet with a thin layer of clear from a spray can, which will strengthen it. Settle the film onto a wet surface, squeeze the water out with a soft brush from the center and use decal softener on shaped areas. Once it is dry, gloss clear follows, then any weathering and finally a flat coat to even the surface out.
