A set of four acrylic paints of 17 ml for a British infantryman of the First World War: the base khaki cloth, its lightening, a shadow tone and brown leather.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British soldier went into the trenches in a cloth tunic of a khaki shade, that is in the color the army had adopted back from its colonial campaigns and did not leave during the years 1914 to 1918. The cloth was coarse, it darkened after rain and after months in the field it faded instead, so two uniforms beside each other seldom looked the same. It is precisely this spread that makes a figure believable: a surface sprayed uniformly comes across as working clothing from a rental, whereas a couple of extra tones turn it into a piece of equipment that has been through something.
The proven order is simple. The whole tunic and the trousers get the base, then the shadow tone is run along the seams, the folds in the armpits and the places under the belt, and finally the knees, the shoulders and the edges of the pockets are picked out with the lightening. The transitions are evened out with a thin glaze of the base shade, which joins the two outer tones. In smaller scales a mild contrast is enough; on larger figures it pays to exaggerate the difference between light and shadow, otherwise it is lost on the finished piece.
The brown tone in the package is not just an extra decoration. The British infantry wore the webbing system of 1908, but when there was a shortage the 1914 pattern leather equipment was issued too, and the boots, the water bottle carrier and the rifle sling were always of leather. The difference between fabric and leather is at the same time the first thing the eye notices on a figure. The paints are applied with a brush; for an even base they can be thinned and sprayed.
