About product

Gotha WD (UWD) in 1:32 scale (Wingnut Wings)

A premium large-scale injection-molded kit of the German twin-engine floatplane Gotha UWD from the renowned Wingnut Wings brand. The model is molded in quality plastic and supplemented with several photo-etched parts and good decals. In the package you will find a pair of Daimler-Mercedes inline engines, counter-rotating propellers, small Carbonit bombs and further extras, for example a case for maps and documents and a camera. The engineering and the instruction booklet are among the best to be found on models of First World War aircraft.

The real subject

The Gotha UWD was one of the twin-engine floatplanes that the Imperial German Navy ordered for long-range reconnaissance and for carrying torpedoes. It was derived from the land-based Gotha G.I and was completed at the end of 1915. The characteristic deep fuselage made it possible to place both Daimler-Mercedes inline engines as close together as possible, so as to limit the yaw of the aircraft if one engine failed. The actual machine was used at the beginning of 1916 to bomb targets in England as well.

Building and painting tips

The kit will be appreciated by more experienced modelers: a biplane on floats calls for careful planning of the rigging and for precise fit. Glue the parts with liquid cement for plastic and join the photo-etched parts and the rigging lines with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Apply a primer before painting and use an airbrush; a large scale rewards careful emphasis on the texture of the covering and on the wooden parts. Finish the cockpit and the engines before you close the fuselage.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of First World War aircraft in the large 1:32 scale
  • Experienced modelers with experience of biplanes and rigging
  • Fans of premium Wingnut Wings kits
  • Anyone interested in rare German naval floatplanes

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
