An injection-molded plastic kit of the legendary Soviet fighter MiG-21MF in 1:32 scale from Trumpeter. The box contains roughly 322 parts on thirteen sprues including a sprue of clear parts, plus white metal parts (the landing gear legs and the radome cone, which doubles as nose weight), rubber tires and resin parts for an optional vignette of the cannon being loaded. There is also a complete engine with a transport trolley and a removable rear fuselage, a boarding ladder, airbrakes and five figures of ground crew. The armament is rich: K-13 and K-13R guided missiles, the older AA-1, UB-16-57 and UB-32-57 rocket pods, OFAB-250 bombs and two types of drop tank. The decals cover two machines, the East German Air Force and the Iraqi Air Force, plus an extensive set of stencilling.
The MiG-21 is the most widespread supersonic aircraft in history: over 11400 were built and they served in more than sixty countries on four continents. The MF version of the early 1970s is among the most successful: the R-13-300 engine, the built-in twin-barrel GSh-23L cannon and a wide range of external stores made it a genuinely multipurpose machine. Anyone interested in the Czechoslovak Air Force will find this a rewarding subject: in Czechoslovak service the MF was the main and most numerous version of the MiG-21. From 1972 it went among others to the 1st Fighter Air Regiment at Ceske Budejovice, the 5th Regiment at Line and the 9th Regiment at Bechyne, and it stayed in service for decades. The decals in this box do not, however, include Czechoslovak markings; anyone who wants to build a Czechoslovak machine will add a separate decal set.
Glue the plastic with thin cement; degrease the white metal parts and join them with super glue, because ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal. Finish the cockpit, the bays and the engine before you close the fuselage, and test the nose balance. In 1:32 scale every unevenness shows, so sand and polish the surfaces carefully and use a primer, especially under metallic shades, which do not forgive the base. Seat the decals on a gloss coat and settle them with a softener, and close with a flat coat and a fine panel wash.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
