The cobalt tone is one of the deepest blues in the modeling range. It stays close to a pure blue, with no shift toward violet or green, so it suits places where a color is meant to look bright and cool at the same time. On a model it most often appears on markings, on stripes and on the areas of national insignia, on sports machines and on brightly colored toy-like vehicles, where a muted shade would come out weak.
Blue pigments cover less well than grays or earth tones, and that applies to this shade too. Straight onto dark plastic or over a black base the color goes pale and looks dirty; it is safer to lay down a light base, ideally white or light gray, and only then spray several thin coats. The depth of color then comes through without having to put the paint on so heavily that it floods the engraving.
The bottle has to be mixed properly before application. Water and the maker's own thinner both serve for thinning; water suits absorbent surfaces, while the thinner is more reliable on smooth plastic and on photo-etched parts. Cobalt can also be muted with gray or sharpened with white, but the resulting mix loses some of its depth, so it is better to mix small quantities and keep checking on a test part.
The bottle holds ten milliliters. A deep blue is usually applied to markings, stripes and smaller areas rather than over the whole surface of a machine, so the contents last a long time. It is sensible to clean the cup and the nozzle of the airbrush straight after work, while the paint is still wet; a cured acrylic film is considerably harder to remove than a fresh coat.
