About product

1:32 Nakajima Ki-44-II Tojo — 3D instrument panels on decal paper

The Red Fox Studio set in 1:32 scale brings an instrument panel printed in color with a relief texture, carried on decal paper. The panel is soaked briefly in water, slid onto the base and holds by itself. That does away with painting dials and with working with resin and photo-etched parts. The set is cut for the Hasegawa kit.

What is special about this cockpit

The Ki-44 was designed as a fast fighter and its cockpit is in proportion — small, narrow and simply equipped. The panel carries a crowded group of round analog gauges, above it is a gunsight, and the sidewalls are bare structure with levers rather than full panels. What matters most is the framed sliding canopy: with it closed the frames are fairly wide and only part of the panel is visible, so it is precisely that part which has to read well. With the canopy slid back, on the other hand, even the inside of the fuselage behind the seat is revealed.

Before the panel's turn comes

Decide first whether the canopy will be open. With a closed cockpit there is no point in overdoing the detail of the sidewalls, whereas the panel is always worth it — it is the only thing properly visible through the frames. Get the sanding and filling of the fuselage seams out of the way beforehand, because sanding dust bites into a fresh print and you will never get it out again. Paint the interior, let it cure fully and degrease the area under the print. Lay the panel on, draw the surplus water off with the edge of a tissue and let it dry before you go on.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building a small fighter cockpit, where the detail of the panel carries the most weight
  • those who do not want to paint small dials with a brush
  • builds with the canopy either closed or slid back
  • 1:32 scale, where a flat plastic panel shows at once

This is an accessory for a kit, not a model of the aircraft. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Please check in advance that it matches your kit.

FAQ

It does. The canopy frames cover part of the panel, but the rest stays clearly visible and a flat plastic panel gives a lot away in this scale.

Before the panel is applied. Sanding dust bites into a freshly laid print and cannot be removed.

It is not. It is a colored 3D textured print on decal paper that is applied by soaking, like a decal.
