Pre-cut self-adhesive painting masks in 1:32 scale from Art Scale. These are not a kit or spare parts but an aid for painting. The masks are stuck onto the clear parts, cover the transparent areas and leave only the frames of the canopy, the windscreen and the side window free. You then spray the framing together with the airframe and get a sharp transition that is practically impossible to achieve with a brush. The single-sided version deals with the outer side of the glazing. The masks are cut to the shape of the parts of a particular kit in this scale, so with a kit of other origin test the fit first. The set is cut for the parts of the Tamiya kit; on a model from another manufacturer the shapes need not agree.
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX was a British fighter version created by combining the airframe of the previous series with a Rolls-Royce Merlin 60 series engine with a two-stage two-speed supercharger. It was a quick way of matching the performance of the opponents of the day at high altitude, and the version eventually became one of the most numerous Spitfires of all. Its distinguishing features are a longer nose with two rows of exhausts, a four-blade propeller and radiators under both wings. The cockpit consists of a fixed windscreen with a flat panel, a sliding canopy and the rear glazing, a fairly broken-up assembly with a great many thin frames.
Wash the clear parts in lukewarm water with detergent before sticking the masks on and let them dry; the mask does not hold on a greasy surface. Pop the masks out of the sheet with the tip of a scalpel, carry them with tweezers and lay them in the middle of the frame, pressing out to the edges only afterward. Smooth the edge down with a toothpick so that the paint does not run under it. On narrow frames it pays to trim the outline with a fresh blade right on the part. Spray the interior color first, then the primer and the camouflage shades, always in thin coats at right angles to the surface. Lift the mask as soon as the paint has flashed off; pull it back at an angle over itself rather than straight up.
The masks are an aid for painting, not a kit or spare parts. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
