Pre-cut masking templates for a model of the American Stearman training biplane in 1:32 scale from the manufacturer Eduard. It is not a kit or a replacement part but an aid for painting. The masks are die-cut from thin kabuki paper, which conforms even to a rounded windscreen and is lifted after spraying without leaving any adhesive behind. The designations PT-17 and N2S-3 in the name refer to two designations of the same machine with different services, so the set covers both variants of the model.
The Stearman was an American biplane with fixed landing gear, a radial engine and two open cockpits one behind the other, which served for basic flying training. The designation PT-17 was used by the US Army Air Forces and N2S-3 by the US Navy. After the war hundreds of these aircraft passed into civilian hands and flew as crop dusters or at air shows, where their striking yellow and blue finish made them famous. Because the cockpits are open, the glazing consists only of small windscreens, but those are all the harder to mask, because they are curved in two directions.
In 1:32 scale every inaccuracy is twice as visible as in smaller scales, so check the mask against the light before spraying. Mask a curved windscreen from the highest point out to the edges and let the paper adhere gradually; do not force it into shape. On a biplane, plan the order of the work in advance, as the lower wing, the fuselage and the struts are harder to paint once the upper wing is in place. Glue the glazing with a cement for glazing or with white PVA glue, as cyanoacrylate will fog a small windscreen. Lift the masks shortly after the last coat has set.
This is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory for one. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
