Copper State Models, a brand concentrated on the themes of the First World War, has prepared a figure of an American airman captured at the moment when he is putting on his flying suit. The 1:32 scale corresponds to the widespread kits of Great War aircraft, so the figure will naturally complement a hangar as well as a field airfield.
The US Army Air Service was the air component of the American army, which joined the fighting on the western front in 1918 and existed until the mid-1920s. The open cockpits of the biplanes of that time exposed the crews to frost and to the rush of air, which is why airmen put heavy suits, gloves and flying helmets on over their uniforms before takeoff. It is exactly this everyday ritual before a flight that the figure captures, giving it a human dimension that the machine alone lacks.
After cleaning, give the figure a primer and work with a brush over smaller areas. Set leather and textile apart by a different degree of sheen: the leather elements will take a fine satin cast, the fabric should stay matte. The shadows of the hollows will be brought out by a thinned dark glaze, and the edges of the folds will be drawn out by a lighter tone. Beside a biplane standing nearby, the figure will indicate the scale of the whole scene at once.
