Double-sided painting masks for the Westland Whirlwind Mk.I in 1:32 scale: self-adhesive masks for the glazing from the outside and the inside alike. An accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the aircraft. Intended for the Special Hobby kit.

A set of self-adhesive painting masks for a model of the British Westland Whirlwind Mk.I fighter in 1:32 scale. It is neither a kit nor decals; these are cut masks that you stick onto the glazing, spray over and peel off once the paint is on. Double-sided means that the set holds pieces for the outside and the inside of the glazing alike. The masks are cut to the shape of the parts of one particular plastic kit in this scale, so reckon on them not necessarily fitting a model from another manufacturer.
In 1:32 scale the cockpit is large and the inside is in view. The frames of the glazing are therefore painted from the inside as well, and that is exactly where masking is at its most tedious, because trimming tape by hand inside a canopy is work done blind. When it goes wrong, the finished model shows an uneven frame line from the inside, or overspray on the glazing that can no longer be put right. A pre-cut mask turns this step from an hour of nervous cutting into a few minutes of sticking. The second benefit is consistency: all the frames come out the same width, which hand-cut tape on a broken-up canopy practically cannot guarantee. The masks are cut to measure for the Special Hobby kit.
Wash the glazing first and let it dry completely; on a greasy surface a mask will not hold and the paint will seep under it. Lift the masks off the sheet with the tip of a knife or with tweezers, and do not touch the adhesive side with your fingers. Once stuck, press the edges down with a wooden toothpick, above all where a mask follows a curve. Apply the paint in several very thin coats rather than one heavy one; a thin coat has not the body to seep under an edge. Take a mask off while the paint is freshly dry but not yet fully cured, and pull it back over itself at a sharp angle rather than straight up. Fit and spray the inner masks before the canopy is glued to the fuselage.
This is an accessory to a model, not a kit. Paints, varnish and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
