Nakajima B5N2 Type 97 - double-sided painting mask (1:35)

An accurately cut self-adhesive painting mask in 1:35 scale from Art Scale, cut for the Border Model kit. It is neither a model nor decals but a set of masks in kabuki film with which you protect the cockpit glazing and other appointed areas while spraying. The form is double-sided, so it covers the outside and the inside of the clear parts alike and the frames come out crisp from both views. The individual masks are numbered and, together with the instructions, set exactly where each one goes.

The real subject

The Nakajima B5N2, known as Kate, was a Japanese carrier-borne torpedo and attack bomber of the Second World War, one of the main types flown from carriers. Its glazed cockpit with a great many frames is a typical place where masking by hand takes a great deal of time, and it is exactly there that accurate masks help most.

Use

• Lift the mask off by its number and stick it onto the matching clear part
• Go over it with an airbrush or a brush in the color of the frames and the cockpit
• Once dry, take the mask off and you have crisp transitions with no bleed
• It is worth working with thin applications of paint, so that no ridges form
