The first part of the Western Front Tigers series from Star Decals offers in 1:72 scale the markings of the machines of the first company of the unit that the name records as s.SS.Pz-Abt. 101/501. The set is intended for dressing a finished model up; it holds no kit.
The designations 101 and 501 belong to the same heavy battalion, which was renumbered in the autumn of 1944. In the course of the fighting in the west it re-equipped from heavy Tiger I tanks to the later Tiger II, so the markings cover both stages of its armament. The material is worked out as historical evidence for a modeler who wants to reconstruct a particular machine and its membership of a company.
The Tiger I often carried the protective Zimmerit coating with its pronounced texture and the Tiger II had large vertical areas on the turret. With both it holds that the base has to be evened out with gloss varnish first, otherwise air will settle under the membrane. Onto a textured surface apply softener in two lighter doses and let the decal rest between them, so that the membrane has time to give way to the grooving and does not crack. Wipe the remains of the solution off only once it has dried completely.
