The AH-1Z is an American attack helicopter of the United States Marine Corps, which follows on from the older single-engine Cobras. It is powered by two turboshaft engines, its main rotor has four blades and stub wings with pylons for the armament are carried on the sides of the fuselage. On the ground it stands on skids rather than on wheeled landing gear. The cockpit sits high and is extensively glazed, so it is precisely the sharp boundaries of the finish that decide the impression of the finished model.
A set of masking pieces in 1:35 scale. The pieces are pre-cut exactly to shape, so the slow business of measuring and cutting tape by eye falls away and the boundary of the finish comes out sharp even on a curved surface. They are self-adhesive: a piece is laid onto a dry surface and peeled off once the paint is on. The extent of the set, the position of the individual pieces and the kit the set is cut for are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
Apply the masks to a finished, clean and degreased surface, that is before spraying and not after the paint has dried. Lift them with tweezers or the point of a blade and press the edges down properly, otherwise the paint will run underneath. Apply the paint in several thin coats; a heavy coat builds a ridge at the edge of the mask that stays visible once it is peeled off. Take a mask off as soon as the paint has dried, because after standing longer it holds far more firmly and risks tearing the finish away with it. Wipe off any adhesive residue with alcohol on a cotton swab.
