About product

Bergepanther 06.1943 conversion set, second variant, in 1:35 scale

This item is not a complete kit but a conversion set from the brand Elefant. It allows a model of the Panther Ausf. D tank to be rebuilt into the Bergepanther recovery vehicle in the state corresponding to the production of June 1943, in the second variant of the rendering. A conversion of this type usually replaces the upper part of the hull and adds the equipment that differs on a recovery vehicle from a fighting tank. Before buying we recommend verifying that the set matches the base model you have. Working with resin and the need to cut into the plastic hull make this set a task for more experienced modelers.

The real subject

The Bergepanther was a recovery vehicle built on the chassis of the Panther tank. It came about out of the need to tow heavy tracked vehicles that ordinary half-track tractors were not up to. In place of a turret it carried a cargo platform with a winch and, at the rear, a large bracing spade that dug into the ground during a pull. The vehicles of 1943 differed from later production in a number of details of their equipment and in the arrangement of the superstructure, and the individual batches were not entirely uniform. The set describes the state corresponding to June 1943 in the second variant of the rendering.

Building and painting tips

Follow the instructions for the set, because the conversion calls for parts of the plastic hull to be cut away. Make the cuts with something to spare and bring them to fit only with sandpaper. Wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry, otherwise paint will not hold on them. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, sand wet and with your airways protected. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and on large areas the gel variant helps. Assemble and paint the running gear before you close the hull. At the end a wash in the recesses and dust pigments on the lower parts come in useful.

Who the set is for

  • More experienced modelers who have built a resin conversion before
  • Builders of Second World War equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Anyone interested in recovery and engineer vehicles
  • Those who want an unusual machine in their collection instead of another tank

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
