The BMP-3 came into service in the second half of the 1980s and differed from its predecessors mainly in the layout of the interior. The engine moved to the rear, so the dismounts board over the superstructure above the power unit, and the gun armament brought together a 100 mm cannon with a weapon of smaller caliber in a common mounting. The vehicle can swim; water jets at the rear serve for propulsion on water.
The running gear consists of six wheels on torsion bars on each side. It is just those twelve wheels that this set replaces, and that in a corrected shape: the casting respects the profile of the disk and the outline of the rubber tire more accurately than the original injected parts of the kit.
The enclosed painting mask deals with the most tiresome part of the work, that is separating the metal center from the rubber tire. Instead of laboriously going round with a brush, the mask is stuck on, the dark shade of the tire is sprayed and after it has been taken off the boundary stays sharp around the whole circumference. With twelve wheels it is a saving that the builder will feel at once.
Before the mask is stuck on, the surface has to be perfectly dry and free of grease, otherwise the edge will lift and the paint will run under it. The castings are separated from the gates by a cut. The set is reckoned for the kits of the Zvezda company; with another manufacturer you have to reckon with altering the mounting. The vehicle kit itself is not part of the delivery.
In color it pays not to rely on a single shade on the road wheels. The hub area tends to be more heavily dusted than the tire, on which dust does not hold as long. It is enough to suggest the difference very subtly, and thanks to it the whole chassis gains depth at once.
