A diorama corner with a wooden gate in 1:35 joins a masonry structure with a wooden entrance. It offers a scene with two different materials on one piece.

A diorama display in which the corner of a building meets a wooden gate. For a modeler it is interesting above all because it offers two entirely different surfaces on a small area, masonry and wood, and each of them is painted differently. The terrain is ready and the work concentrates on the surface finish.
A corner is a classic diorama element, because by itself it suggests a street and a town without your having to build a whole building. The gate also adds a story: it divides the space into inside and outside and the viewer automatically imagines what is behind it. The scene therefore works well with a figure standing by the gate or walking through it, and with a smaller vehicle parked by the wall.
Start the wood with a mid-brown base and only then add the drawing of the grain in a darker color pulled with a brush along the grain. Aged wood turns gray, so a light pass of gray with a dry brush moves it decades further on. Hint at the ironwork and the hinges with dark steel and let a thin rust trace run down below them; it is exactly this detail that brings the gate to life. The masonry, on the other hand, is built from a darker base toward lighter brick or plaster, with the joints left showing through. Dust joins the lower areas of both materials into one place.
The casting is supplied untreated; the paints, the patina and any addition of figures remain entirely in your hands.
