The real subject

Kontakt-1 is Soviet explosive reactive armor from the 1980s, which tanks received in the form of individual blocks fixed on the outside to the turret, the front of the hull and the side skirts. The purpose was to beat down the effect of a shaped charge warhead before it reached the armor itself. For a modeler it is a conspicuous feature: a machine clad in blocks looks quite different from a bare turret and adds a great many edges and shadows to a model.

What the set contains

The package holds individual blocks of reactive armor in 1:35 scale. The set is large in the number of elements, so it is enough even for a densely clad machine. The exact counts and the division of the elements are stated by the manufacturer on the packaging. The arrangement of the blocks differs from machine to machine, so it pays to have a photograph or a drawing of the particular vehicle you are building to hand.

Building and painting tips

• Cut excess material away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the remainder down.
• The parts are not polystyrene and are glued with cyanoacrylate glue.
• Mark the layout out dry first, so that the rows of blocks keep their spacing and direction.
• Wash and degrease the elements before painting, and only then prime them.
• Paint the blocks in the same shade as the vehicle and set them apart only with a darker shadow in the gaps between them.
• Chipped paint on the edges of the blocks and dust in the gaps will turn a regular grid into a machine in use.
