In a diorama it is usually the building that sets the whole mood: only beside it do the vehicles and figures acquire size and meaning.
The farmhouses of Western and Central Europe share features that turn up in dioramas again and again - masonry ground floor, a tall gable roof, a farm wing adjoining the living quarters and a yard enclosed between them. Farmsteads like these were the most common background to the fighting in Normandy, in the Ardennes and in northern Germany between 1940 and 1945; advancing units settled into them, put out fires in them and built firing positions behind their walls. The subject is therefore versatile and can be used across the whole Western Front.
A building is usually not put in the middle of a composition - it is more effective to move it toward the edge and leave clear space in front of it in which the main action takes place. It also pays to plan where the diorama will be lit from: harsh light falling at an angle brings out the structure of the walls and the roof, while even lighting tends to suppress it.
