This item is not a kit but an accessory set of photo-etched sheet. It contains thin metal parts with which a plastic model of the Japanese Type 4 Ho-Ro self-propelled gun in 1:35 scale is supplemented and refined. Photo-etch can faithfully capture the thickness of the real sheet-metal covers, grilles and small fittings, that is of elements that cannot be cast by injection molding in plastic. The maker is the Japanese company FineMolds, which has long specialized in Japanese military equipment.
The Type 4 Ho-Ro was a Japanese self-propelled gun of the Second World War period. It was created by mounting a 150 mm howitzer on the chassis of the Type 97 Chi-Ha medium tank. The weapon was carried in an open superstructure protected only by a front and side shield, so the crew remained uncovered from above and from behind. Very few vehicles of this type were built and they were committed in the closing phase of the fighting in the Pacific. It is precisely the open fighting compartment that makes the Ho-Ro a rewarding subject for a diorama, because it stays well in view throughout.
Cut the photo-etched parts out with a sharp scalpel or photo-etch scissors on a firm surface, and never snap them off. Lead the bends over a metal ruler or in a bending tool, so that the edge is sharp and straight. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a minimal amount, and on larger areas a gel variant with a longer setting time helps. Degreased metal has to be sprayed with a primer before painting, otherwise the covering layer will flake off. Where a photo-etched part replaces a plastic detail, count on sanding the original shape smooth.
This is an accessory set, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
