A replacement gun mantlet and with it a turned 7.5 cm PaK 42 L/70 barrel for a model in 1:35 scale. Both replace the kit parts in the place where a model is most visible and where inaccuracy is hardest to hide: a long barrel draws the eye, and the front of the superstructure with the mantlet is a surface on show.
The Jagdpanzer IV is a German tank destroyer built on the running gear of the Panzer IV tank. Instead of a rotating turret it has a fixed superstructure with sloping walls, and in it a gun mounted in a mantlet. The version with the long gun carries the designation 7.5 cm PaK 42 L/70. The figure L/70, however, says nothing about the caliber but about the length of the barrel: the barrel is seventy times longer than its caliber measures, and the caliber is precisely 7.5 cm. That is why on this machine the barrel is conspicuously long and projects far beyond the outline of the hull.
A turned barrel comes in one piece. That does away with gluing two halves together and the subsequent sanding of the lengthwise joint, which with a long barrel takes the most time and readily spoils the circular cross-section. A part made in one piece also holds its straightness better, which on an item this long shows at first glance.
First try everything dry and only then cut the original parts off the kit. The opening in the front of the superstructure may need slightly enlarging; go in small steps and keep trying the fit. Before painting, wash the smooth turned surface, degrease it and coat it with a base color, otherwise the paint will not hold on it. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue in small drops, or with two-part epoxy where you need time to line things up. During the rest of the work do not pick the model up by the barrel; carry it by the hull.
