The third set of the series devoted to long-range reconnaissance. The name of the item is more detailed than for the other parts: besides two figures it names M16 rifles, lightweight rucksacks and standard field gear. It is exactly this list that makes the choice easier, because it says straight away how the figures will be equipped.
A lightweight rucksack was essential for long-range patrols: it had to hold supplies for several days and at the same time must not hinder rapid movement. Together with standard field gear and a rifle of the M16 family it creates a silhouette that differs strikingly from a soldier riding on an armored vehicle. For the builder of a scene this is an advantage, because figures equipped this way give away at once what type of scene it is. A bulkier pack also shifts the center of gravity, so check that the figure stands firmly on the base before you glue it.
Paint the rucksack and the slings separately from the clothing, otherwise the whole figure merges. A procedure from a darker shade to a brightening of the edges and the buckles proves itself; metal clasps need only be suggested with a dot of dark steel. Leave the rifles matte and noticeably darker than the equipment. At the end add dust to the footwear and the lower part of the trousers, so that the figure visually sits into the terrain. Suggest the slings of the weapons with a thin strip of foil, which holds its shape better than paper.
