The M1070 is an eight-wheeled heavy tractor of the US Army which, coupled with the M1000 semi-trailer, forms the HET system meant for carrying tanks and other heavy vehicles. Its original role is purely transport, and yet it was exactly these machines that found themselves in threatened convoys during the deployment in Iraq. Crews therefore fitted the vehicles with add-on armor on the cab and with a station for a machine gun, so that the combination could defend itself when ambushed on the route. Improvised as well as factory-engineered variants came about in this way, and they differ from the standard tractor at first glance.
Conversion sets change the silhouette of a vehicle, so it pays to plan the sequence in advance and leave the items that are hard to reach to a later stage. In color, convoy machines keep to a desert palette with a marked layer of dust; the transition between the armor and the original cab looks better with a slightly different gloss.
