Manhole covers in 1:35 scale, that is, an element that looks self-evident in a city scene and that most models nevertheless lack. A roadway without a single cover, drain inlet or curb comes across as a bare surface; but one cover in the right place is enough and the surface immediately starts to look like a real street.
Into city and industrial dioramas with hardware and figures in 1:35 scale. The cover can be placed in the middle of a driving lane, by a curb or into a yard beside a building. It is rewarding as a pretext for a story as well: an open manhole with the lid moved aside next to the opening suggests that somebody was working in the scene or that something was hidden underground.
The cover is set into the base so that it is flush with the surface of the roadway. The surest thing is to mark the outline, take the material away at the place of the opening and only then glue the cover in; when it is stuck on top, the edge is seen. Cyanoacrylate glue suits the gluing. Wash and degrease the surface before painting. A cast-iron cover is suited by a dark gray base, rusty shades dry-brushed out onto the relief after it and finally dusting in the gaps. Fill the transition between the cover and the roadway with a thin layer of dust, so that the joint disappears.
For modelers who are building a city diorama and care about the small things that believability of the whole is made up of. The base, the hardware, the figures, the paints and the glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
