A photo-etched metal set in 1:35 scale from the Chinese brand E.T. Model, a specialist in accessories for models of military vehicles. The fret carries a finely etched structure with a pattern of cut-outs that imitates the shaped leaves of the modern camouflage netting used by NATO armies. The designation Type.1 distinguishes one of the patterns that the manufacturer offers in this range. The set is a universal one and is not intended for one particular kit.
A camouflage net is among the details that change the overall impression of a finished model most — it breaks up the clean outlines of the vehicle and gives the scene both a sense of scale and a story. It cannot be imitated in plastic, and fabric tends to be coarse in this scale; photo-etched metal, on the other hand, is thin enough and holds its position once formed, so it can convincingly drape over the turret, the superstructure, the load or the crates on the fenders. It can also be used on its own as a diorama item, for example thrown over supplies or a shelter.
Annealing makes the work much easier: hold the part briefly over a flame and let it cool, and the metal softens and holds folds far better. Form the net gradually and directly on the model, so that it follows its shapes, and fix it with cyanoacrylate or in spots with a two-part epoxy. Apply a base coat meant for metal before painting. Then come a spray coat in camouflage shades, a dark wash in the cut-outs to bring the structure out and, if you like, the addition of scattered foliage or narrow strips of fabric to break up the regularity.
