A more extensive add-on set of photo-etched brass sheet from Voyager Model. It does not hold a model of the tank but parts with which a kit bought separately is reworked. It concentrates on the external equipment of the turret and the hull: stowage bins, wire baskets for materiel and identification panels, that is features that make up the characteristic silhouette of a vehicle in service.
The Dragon 3535/3536 kit serves as the basis; it is bought separately.
The M1A1 and the M1A2 are modernized versions of the American M1 Abrams main battle tank. On vehicles deployed in the field a quantity of external equipment accumulates, because the crew needs to carry its own kit, spare parts and supplies. The abbreviation CIP stands for the panels for recognizing one's own vehicles, which are mounted on the outside of the tanks on the sides of the turret and at the rear, in order to lower the risk of being hit by one's own units. It is precisely these flat panels and the frames of the wire baskets that are always disproportionately bulky in plastic.
With a larger photo-etched set it pays to anneal the brass before building. You hold a part briefly over the flame of a candle or a spirit burner until the sheet changes color slightly and let it cool freely. The material then softens markedly, is shaped into curves more easily and does not break when bent. Anneal with judgment, though: on fine frames it takes the stiffness out of the sheet and the part is then easily crumpled. Assemble the wire baskets on a flat surface and put the frames together with a minimum of glue, so that the openings of the mesh do not get filled. Build the bins step by step, the bottom first and only then the sides. At the end make sure the assembled units sit on the plastic underneath, and if need be remove the superfluous molded details from the model.
