The Israeli artillery took over the American M109 self-propelled howitzer and gave it names of its own: the older examples carried the designation Doher, and the modernized form then Rochev. The machines went through service from the 1970s, through the operations in Lebanon, right up to their withdrawal in recent years, and their hulls are covered by a dense network of small markings: labels of access points, warnings by the fuel and oil filler necks, numbers and unit symbols.
On the real subject these inscriptions were sprayed through a cut sheet of metal, so they merge with the surface and have its matte quality. A decal will never catch that up: under it stays a carrier film, which shines on a rough casting and gives itself away when seen from the side. Spraying through film has, against that, zero thickness and suits even places with a pronounced texture, where a decal would not settle at all.
Howitzers of this type formed the backbone of Israeli fire support for several decades and drove through the Sinai, the Golan Heights and the mountains of Lebanon. In later pictures their hulls are bleached by the sun, with dust baked in around the rivets and the inscriptions scuffed in places right down to bare metal. For a modeler who wants to play with wear, it is an exceptionally rewarding subject.
The dimensions are based on the M109 kits in 1:35 scale from the Kinetic, AFV Club and Legend Productions companies. You work with very small parts, so tweezers with a fine tip, good light and calm are useful. The paint is applied in two passes in thin coats, so that it does not get under the edge of the letters.
Coating materials and a kit are not in the shipment. A modeler has to decide beforehand which of the two Israeli forms is being built, because the range of the markings differs between them.
