A scenery accessory for dioramas in 1:35 scale. The fence is deliberately irregular — the boards differ in width and height and the top edge of the fence does not form a straight line. The result is fencing that looks put together from whatever was available and repaired many times over. It is supplied as a laser-cut wooden part for assembly and painting.
Most real rural fences were irregular. Boards were added gradually as one or another rotted or broke off, and the timber came from various sources. That lack of uniformity is immensely valuable in a diorama: an irregular fence says at once that the scene has a history, and it reliably breaks up the machine-made look that threatens models most. It suits scenes of abandoned homesteads, burned-out villages and poorer farm yards.
Break the parts carefully out of the carrier sheet and true the cut edges with fine abrasive paper. Glue the wood with thin PVA wood glue or with cyanoacrylate; before building, let the assembly dry out completely on a flat surface so that the fence does not warp. You can heighten the irregularity further: before gluing, individual boards can be shortened, bent or left out altogether and the resulting gap left empty. Paint board by board with browns and grays of differing strength, so that each piece is worn differently. A dark wash into the gaps, a dry brush on the edges and pigment at ground level finish off the impression of a fence left untended for a long time.
