The real subject

French armored cars of the 1914 pattern are among the first machines of their kind. They arose in haste on the chassis of civilian cars, which were given an armored superstructure and armament, and at the beginning of the First World War they served mainly for reconnaissance and for quick raids. Once the front came to a halt in the trenches, wheeled armored vehicles lost their use in the West and left for other theaters. For a modeler it is a rewarding subject: every example looks a little different and bears the marks of the hand work of the shops that built it.

What the part is

A replacement canopy for the vehicle in the retracted position, that is in the form in which it is pushed back and the crew is in the open air. It replaces the part from the kit and makes it possible to build the vehicle in a state other than the one the base variant allows for. The placing and the exact order of assembly are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Building and painting tips

The part is not polystyrene, so it is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, not with a liquid glue for plastic. Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and carefully sand the remainder. Before painting, wash and degrease the part and apply a base coat, otherwise the finish will not hold. Try it dry in its seat before gluing; with parts that change the state of a vehicle, the surrounding surfaces often need adjusting as well.

Who it is for

For a modeler who builds vehicles of the First World War and wants a piece in the display case that is not seen all that often. Working with a replacement part is easy; just allow yourself time for the trial fitting.
