Toward the end of the war German production was struggling with a shortage of practically everything, rubber not excepted. Military tires with an off-road tread were ceasing to meet demand, and so tires originally intended for trucks in civilian service were fitted to the vehicles. Photographs of captured and abandoned machines from the last months of the fighting often show a combination of both on a single hull.
It is precisely for that reason that this variant makes sense for a modeler. It makes it possible to build a vehicle of late production and at the same time it offers the option of mixing the patterns between the individual axles, which is a detail that comes across as convincing at once and yet costs no extra work. You will recognize the road tread by the finer longitudinal ribs instead of coarse transverse blocks.
The casting is of resin, the tread and the sidewall lettering are rendered sharply and the surface has a matte structure matching rubber. The working is the usual: separate the pour gate, level the area, wash and degrease. Then it is only a thin layer of ground and matte gray.
Weathering is done from the bottom up. Apply the pigment from the contact patch upward and let it fade out at roughly half the height of the tire; higher up the wheel will stay cleaner, because dirt does not hold there. Bring the lettering on the side out lightly with a paler shade, so that it does not disappear under the weathering.
A small trick helps with matching the color. Mix a larger quantity of the shade on the palette than you need and keep the rest until the end of the build. When you come to seat the wheels and retouch the glued edges, you will have exactly the same tone at hand and the repair will not be visible on the finished model.
