The Sd.Kfz. 251 is a medium half-track armored personnel carrier, the Sd.Kfz. 11 a half-track tractor built on a related chassis. At the front both vehicles carry an unpowered axle with wheels by which the vehicle steers; braking one track helps in a sharper turn. The wheels were fitted with tires from several suppliers, so in period photographs of the same type of vehicle you will find different treads. This set is based on the tire carried under the Dunlop name.
On a model of a half-track the wheel sits at the viewer's eye level and cannot be hidden. Out of the kit it comes as a part that has to be cleaned up around the circumference, and it is exactly that cleaning up which tends to wipe the fine tread away. Separately made wheels limit this step and allow the type of tire to be chosen from a photograph of a particular vehicle, or two vehicles on the same diorama to be told apart.
Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part, sand the remainder down and wash and degrease the wheels before painting. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts and the manufacturer's instructions. Seat them so that they stand vertical and both sit down on the base alike; if the wheels are made with the flattening from the weight of the vehicle, the flattened part has to face the ground. Dark gray suits the tire rather than black, and the lower part of the wheel suits dust in the shade of the terrain the vehicle drives over.
What is supplied is an add-on set of front wheels. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
