An injection-molded plastic kit of an unusual captured-equipment conversion of the German half-track in 1:35 scale. Border Model has added to the box an interior for the hull and the cab, a complete engine, workable (link) tracks, photo-etched parts, clear parts and above all a separate captured French R35 turret with a 37 mm gun. The combination of a half-track and a rotating gun turret makes the model an unmistakable piece.
The Sd.Kfz.251 was the basic German half-track armored personnel carrier of the Second World War; the Ausf.D was its simplified late production version with sloped rear plates. The Germans made wide use of captured materiel - in this case the turret from the French Renault R35 tank with a short 37 mm gun. Such improvised combinations served mainly for patrolling, security duty and fighting in rear areas, so the subject is a rare field conversion rather than a production machine.
Deal with the running gear, the engine and the hull interior first - once it is closed and the turret is fitted you can no longer reach inside. The open hull also stays visible, so it pays to paint it before you close it up. Glue with thin cement for plastic and build the link tracks patiently, piece by piece. Paint with an airbrush: base, camouflage in thin layers, gloss coat, decals and a matte coat. For weathering use washes in the recesses and pigments - dust and mud on the running gear and tracks, rubbed edges. A rewarding subject for a diorama with figures.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
