An injection-molded plastic kit of the 5P71 launcher with the 5V27 surface-to-air guided missile of the Pechora system, carried in the West under the designation SA-3 Goa, in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Trumpeter. The model consists of the launcher with its launch rails and the missile, that is a whole that is a rewarding subject for a display case even on its own and at the same time serves well as the focus of a diorama of a firing position. The number of parts and the contents of the package are stated in the instructions enclosed with the kit.
The Pechora system was a surface-to-air missile system intended for destroying air targets at low and medium altitudes. It completed systems of greater range where an approach at a low level was to be expected. The 5P71 launcher was relocatable and was transported to a firing position by towing, while the 5V27 missile was two-stage with a solid-fuel booster. The system belonged among the most widespread means of its kind and in various upgraded forms it stayed in service for decades.
The launcher is largely made up of thin beams and frames, so the parts are cut from the sprue with a sharp knife or nippers and the remains of the sprue gates are sanded off, so that nothing bends. It is practical to build, paint and clear-coat the missile separately and to seat it on the launcher only at the very end. The contrasting stripes and the technical lettering on the missile are the main visual motif of the model, so it pays to lay a truly smooth gloss coat under the decals. The structure of the launcher is broken up and a wash acts very well in it, whereas weathering is best kept in a mild form, because it is hardware operated under a shelter in a firing position.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
