The Station of the Cross is a small religious structure for a diorama in 1:35 scale, of the kind that stands by field roads in Catholic Europe.
Responsibility details are not available.
A stone post with a niche and a scene from the Passion, that is, one of the stations of the cross. In the landscape it usually stands in a row along the climb to a place of pilgrimage, but also on its own at a crossroads, where it filled the role of a landmark. Into a 1:35 diorama it brings exactly the kind of small roadside furniture that gives a scene a geographical and a religious anchoring sooner than any building.
It is widespread in Bavaria, Austria, southern Germany, Moravia, Slovenia, Poland and northern Italy, so the post will stand up believably in the campaign of 1944 through the Alpine foothills as well as in a peaceful rural scene without uniforms. The contrast works strongly: equipment driving past folk piety is a motif that gives a diorama a narrative, not just a description. It is a good idea to place the station off the axis of the tableau, so that it comes across as part of the landscape and not as an exhibit.
Sink the footing below the level of the terrain and make drifted soil and a worn path around it, or the post looks as though it were merely lying on the board. The stone will come across better with a dark wash running into the joints and a light dry brush over the edges; add moss at the foot and light lime bloom. Leave the scene in the niche colorful and slightly faded, and weak dust will unite it with its surroundings. Flowers or a modest wooden cross at the foot will finish the scene off.
