The figure depicts a gendarme in the rank of sergeant, that is the basic serving grade of the corps, in the form of 1938. The gendarmerie carried out security duty above all outside the large cities, so the subject is close to a village or small-town scene.
The uniform of the gendarmerie is among the most striking Czech uniforms of the 1930s. Its hallmarks are the headgear with an ornament, darker cloth with lighter piping and a distinctively cut coat. The figure is therefore recognizable even without a caption, and in a display case it forms a natural transition between military figures and civilian subjects.
It suits a country road, a railway halt, a station building or a scene with a horse-drawn cart. It also makes a good pair with another figure from the same series, because gendarmes used to patrol in twos. The base does not have to be large; a strip of road and a fence are enough.
Paint the cloth matte and with a fine grain, because too smooth a surface looks like plastic. Separate the lighter piping with a sharp edge, not with a blend, because in this scale a blurred division is lost. The leather parts take a darker brown with a spot of sheen, and the metal on the headgear only needs to be suggested with a drop of a light color.
