The Sturmgeschütz IV, in military nomenclature the Sd.Kfz.167, came about out of practical necessity. When production of assault guns on the Panzer III chassis could not keep up with demand, the armored superstructure was transferred to the Panzer IV chassis. The result was a low turretless vehicle with the gun mounted rigidly in the front of the superstructure, rounded out by a projecting driver's cab on the left side of the nose.
The main weapon was the 7.5 cm StuK 40 gun with a barrel 48 calibers long, hence the figure L/48 in the name. The caliber is therefore 7.5 cm, and the number 48 gives the length of the barrel, not its diameter. The vehicle served both for direct support of infantry and for destroying armored equipment, and at the close of the war it was among the most frequently encountered German assault guns.
The low silhouette and the large flat surfaces of the superstructure are rewarding for work on the surface. Before gluing, rid the parts of surplus material and traces of production, sand the seating faces and try the assembly dry, especially on the running gear. The tracks and the wheels usually take the most time, so it pays to spray them separately and to fit them to the vehicle only once they are painted. Wash and degrease the whole model before painting, so that the finish holds.
The kit will please modelers who collect German equipment of the close of the war and want a vehicle in the cabinet that differs from tanks with a rotating turret. Thanks to the low silhouette it also works well in a diorama, where it can be rounded out with figures and groundwork.
