Umbrellas for a diorama, 1:35 scale

A set of two umbrellas in 1:35 scale, the scale in which a figure of an adult measures roughly five centimeters. It is a stand-alone addition to a scene, not part of a kit.

Where an umbrella comes into play

An umbrella is one of the few accessories that tells you at once, in a diorama, what the weather is and what the mood of the scene is. It suits civilian scenes in the street or at a market, scenes with refugees or onlooking inhabitants, and anywhere rain or harsh sun should be apparent. Because it sits high above the ground and has a large continuous surface, it also works as the visual high point of a scene: the viewer's eye finds it first and only then comes down to the figures and the equipment. The two pieces in the box allow either two separate figures to be set up or a small group to be arranged in which one umbrella covers several people.

Tips for painting and placing

• Wash and degrease the parts before painting, as paint holds badly on a greasy surface.
• Lay the paint on in thin coats so that it does not flood the fine relief.
• Distinguish the canopy and the handle by shade and by sheen; the canopy tends to be flatter.
• Set the umbrella in place only once the terrain is finished, otherwise it gets in the way and is easily damaged.
• Match the tilt of the umbrella to the stance of the figure, so that the scene does not look stiff.
• The manufacturer's instructions give the particular assembly procedure.

Who the set is for

For builders of dioramas and display scenes in 1:35 scale who need one small thing with a story to finish a tableau. It serves just as well with military equipment as in purely civilian scenes.
