About product

DEF Model 1:35 US LVT-7 Early - workable track

This is not a model of the vehicle but an accessory: a set of workable tracks for the American LVT-7 amphibious assault vehicle in its early form, in 1:35 scale. The track is made up of individual links that are put together into a working whole, and so replaces the one-piece track supplied in the box. The tracks are meant for Tamiya, Academy and Hobby Boss kits.

What the set offers

The LVT-7 is a tall vehicle with long, exposed running gear, so on a model the track forms a pronounced horizontal line along the whole length of the hull. With a one-piece track it shows at once that it holds the shape of the mold: the upper run stays taut and the transition over the drive sprocket and the idler wheel tends to be angular. A track assembled from individual links does not have that problem - it passes around the wheels smoothly, drops of its own accord between the return rollers and, when set on uneven ground, adapts to the surface. The guide teeth and the inner face of the links stay readable too.

The real subject

The LVT-7 is an amphibious assault vehicle of the United States Marine Corps that entered service in the 1970s as a replacement for older amphibious carriers. It can swim out of the deck of a landing ship, reach the shore under its own power and carry on overland, which makes it a basic means of landing. After a later update it received the designation AAV-7, so the early form differs in details of equipment and running gear from the versions most often modeled today.

Usage tips

Assemble the track according to the instructions on the finished running gear, so that it fits the spacings of the particular model, and work in shorter sections. Given its amphibious service, weathering with a greater share of salt and wet sand pays off on this vehicle - lay a lighter dust pigment over a darker base and let it dry out into uneven patches around the contact surfaces.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of United States Marine Corps subjects in 1:35 scale
  • Those interested in the early form of amphibious vehicles
  • Modelers for whom the fidelity of a one-piece track is not enough
  • Diorama builders with a landing or shoreline scene
