A plastic kit of the modern American wheeled vehicle M1240A1 M-ATV fitted with the RPGNET protection system. According to the manufacturer the package contains a fully detailed interior (both the crew compartment and the engine bay), clear parts, photo-etched parts, rubber tires and decals. Rye Field Model is a brand known for fine part breakdown and rich internal structure; it is a kit rather for more advanced modelers, who will appreciate that the model can be built with the access panels open.
The abbreviation MRAP stands for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected, that is a vehicle designed so that the crew survives the blast of a mine or a charge under the vehicle. The key is the V-shaped hull, which deflects the blast wave to the sides instead of letting the floor absorb it. The whole category grew out of the bitter experience of Iraq and Afghanistan, where improvised charges caused the heaviest losses. The M-ATV from Oshkosh is the answer to the fact that large heavy MRAPs were not mobile enough in Afghan terrain: it offers comparable protection but is markedly more agile, and it replaced armored HMMWVs. RPGNET is net armor against RPG rocket-propelled grenades. The net with its metal knots, stretched on a light frame at a distance from the hull, catches the round before it reaches the armor and disrupts the working of its fuze. Compared with classic slat armor it is noticeably lighter, and on a model it is the most striking feature: a vehicle wrapped in the net looks utterly characteristic.
Finish and paint the interior, the engine and the running gear before you close the hull; afterward you cannot reach them. It works well to build in subassemblies and to glue with thin cement for plastic and a needle applicator. Lay down a primer, then the desert shade with an airbrush; assemble and paint the RPGNET net separately where possible and fit it to the vehicle at the very end, otherwise spraying and masking underneath it are difficult. Last come washes in the corners and pigments for dust and mud effects; it is exactly the weathering that makes the M-ATV a vehicle from a convoy rather than from an exhibition hall.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
